For some time I was a little unclear about short films and what they achieve – were they self-indulgent works of art for those that could afford the production costs, were they for the aspiring filmmaker who is looking to get there big break into film or was it an opportunity to showcase some acting talent?
To be frank, I don’t know and don’t really care but what I do believe is that short films are becoming more popular as technology enables more filmmakers to shoot and edit at a fraction of the cost of a feature as well as the support from platforms such as Vimeo and there ‘staff picks’ section on the site.
One thing that is great to see is actors of the calibre of Benedict Cumberbatch starring in short films. ‘Inseparable’, Directed by Nick White, has appeared online recently and it’s a beautifully shot film that has minimal dialogue and a good piece of storytelling at its core.
Although a little predictable in places and judging by the credits a healthy budget, the film should be viewed for the acting masterclass from Cumberbatch (although the beard is a little dodgy) as well as Eric Maddisons cinematography and Whites direction.
Watch and enjoy here.
